COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama chose to reject tens of thousands of jobs, despite bipartisan and union support, Wednesday, when he blocked progress on the Keystone XL pipeline.
Speaker of the House John Boehner condemned the decision in a press release: "President Obama is destroying tens of thousands of American jobs and shipping American energy security to the Chinese. There's really - there's no other way to put it: the President is selling out American jobs for politics."
The Laborers International Union of North America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, AFL-CIO, the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Pipeline Contractors Association support the pipeline project, yet Obama sold them out.
Obama denied tens of thousands of blue collar union and non-union workers employment in high-wage manufacturing and construction jobs in favor of his no growth environmental alarmist base who threatened to withhold campaign contributions if Obama approves the project, as reported by CNN on Oct 28. On Nov 10, the State Department announced that he issued Executive Order 13337, delaying the project until the first quarter of 2013.
By waiting until after the election, Obama chose his re-election campaign over the unions that supported him and, more importantly, over the economy.
The President's Job Council issued a report, Tuesday, which advised Obama to "move forward on projects [to deliver electricity and fuel] that can support hundreds of thousands of jobs ." The Washington Times reports that this project alone "could create 20,000 jobs, by the end of February" if approved.
Boehner pledged "to continue fighting for the thousands of much-needed jobs the pipeline will create, especially for those hit hardest by the Obama administration's disastrous economic policies ."
With real unemployment percentages in the double digits and gas prices fluctuating between $3 and $4 a gallon, Obama placing self interest over national interest is especially despicable.
Lest we forget, Obama accelerated the approval of half a billion dollars in funding for doomed from the beginning ventures like Solyndra and gave more than half a billion to an Al Gore backed electric car company in Finland, neither of which improved the employment situation, energy prices or the economy.
Ironically, Obama's campaign released their first commercial claiming Obama has strengthened America's energy economy. The commercial will begin to air on Thursday.
