>> per welcome back. the committee is scheduled to vote on a new gun control legislation. the measure is designed to curb illegal gun trafficking and purchasing. tomorrow's scheduled vote will be the first offered in the wake of the newtown , connecticut tragedy. meantime today, former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords made an emotional return to the safeway parking lot where she was shot two years ago and urged lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws .
>> be bold, be courageous. please support background checks .
>> joining me now, one of the sponsors of the gun trafficking bill, richard blumenthal of connecticut . thank you so much for your time.
>> thank you.
>> talk to me about why you believe this is a key start here.
>> this illegal trafficking ban is a critical cornerstone of a comprehensive strategy to help stop gun violence . the reason is simply there is no law now incredibly, no law at all that prohibits illegal trafficking. we are talking about straw purchases where somebody buys a gun for another person who would be barred from buying a gun and also actions against experiences. the trafficking networks against the ringleaders and the kingpins who profit from the sales of illegal guns. 20 years in prison, potentially 30 year citizen maximum will spend a strong message and forfeiture of property and a range of measures that can be a comprehensive strategy that include background checks as well as a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines. this step is a vitally important one.
>> talk to me about the bipartisan support. many in the beginning right after newtown in your home state believed if nothing else, universal background checks is something that you can see support from both sides. that seems to at least at this point not to be the case. it is a more daunting task than first believed by those who would like to see that passed. a ban on assault weapons or ammunition, the chances of that passing according to folks from both sides seems very difficult. maybe not impossible, but difficult here. the bipartisan support, is it something you are optimistic about or waning after the days and nights that we watch the parents cry out for help?
>> i am very hopeful, even optimistic about the bipartisan support for the illegal trafficking ban. we are talking about guns that reached the streets of our major cities and caused 2,000 deaths since newtown . that horrific tragedy that i think is continuing in the sense of urgencey and momentum in part because of the very powerful and eloquent spokes people like gabby give or who is we just heard. i am optimistic about bipartisan support for illegal trafficking that we already have. we have democrats like myself and senator leahy was leading that the chairman of the committee is leading the trafficking effort. i think we can muster support. there is a spectrum of political acceptability so to speak and bipartisan support and maybe the assault weapon ban is the toughest most uphill climb for any of the measures. they all have legs and especially if the nra is counting on the connecticut effect, dissipating or fading i, i think
