Canadian mesothelioma advocates have lost a major battle in their fight against asbestos, while their American counterparts gear up for another battle of their own in Washington.

Despite months of protests by health organizations, mesothelioma activists,?including the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Medical Association, the Quebec government has agreed to extend a loan that will reopen Canada?s largest asbestos mine. The $58 million dollar loan has been on the table since the Jeffrey Mine in the town of Asbestos closed last year due to financial problems, laying off some 500 workers. The loan had been contingent on raising seed money from investors. The mine?s president estimates that the loan will keep the mine open for at least another 20 years.

While it will put about 400 Asbestos residents back to work, the reopening of the Jeffrey Mine will also put them at risk for mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer and a host of other serious diseases associated with asbestos.? The risk may be even greater in the third world countries which import Canadian asbestos, where safety standards are often lax. Ironically, the Canadian media reports that asbestos is rarely used inside Canada and is even being removed from dozens of public buildings, including the Prime Minister?s residence.

At the same time, U.S. mesothelioma advocates, physicians and other experts are gearing up to make their own case against asbestos on Capitol Hill. Among those slated to appear before Congress in late July is Barbara Minty McQueen, the wife of actor Steve McQueen, who died of mesothelioma in 1980. McQueen will join several noted mesothelioma physicians to make the case for a U.S. ban on the use of asbestos.?

Mesothelioma advocates have stepped up their efforts to ban asbestos after a U.S. Geological Survey Report showed a 34 percent increase in U.S. asbestos consumption in 2011. So far, the U.S. has refused to ban the substance, which has been banned by all members of the European Union and is considered a serious carcinogen by the World Health Organization.? The WHO estimates that 100,000 people around the world, including about 2,500 Americans, die of mesothelioma each year.??

The memory of a late swimming champion looms large at the Olympic pool, especially as his best event ? the 100-meter breaststroke ? approaches Sunday.

Alexander Dale Oen of Norway died in April at age 26 from heart disease ? months before he was to be the leading hope for Norwegian swimming gold in London. He won the world championship in the 100-meter breaststroke last July.

Some swimmers said they were dedicating their swims to Dale Oen.

"We're carrying him with us all the time," countrywoman Sara Nordenstam said following her heat in the 400-meter individual medley. She said the swimmers will honor him by "swimming fast and remembering him and remember everything that he taught us and go for the goals that we set together."

The opening ceremony, particularly the queen's debut as a Bond girl, earned several positive reviews.

"I was worried that there was too much self-parody, that the world might be laughing at us," wrote columnist Giles Coren in The Times of London. "But they were laughing with us. They were silently awed."

He wasn't wrong.

"Often seen as reserved and unapproachable, the Queen changed all that alongside James Bond," wrote German newspaper Die Welt.

The 86-year-old Elizabeth greeted Bond actor Daniel Craig at Buckingham Palace and then appeared to fly to the stadium before parachuting to the ground. Moments later, the real Elizabeth appeared with husband Prince Philip to be greeted by the crowd.

The sequence has already provided the defining images of the games, according to Sydney's Daily Telegraph in Australia, where the queen also reigns.

"A few hundred years ago director Danny Boyle could have been sent to the Tower for even suggesting such treason," the newspaper said. "But as if to show how far England and the monarchy have come in that time, Her Majesty not only let Boyle get away with it. She was actually in on the joke."

Two-time defending gold medalists Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor of the United States wore long-sleeved shirts on top of bikini bottoms for their 21-18, 21-19 victory over Natalie Cook and Tasmin Hinchley, a match that started at 11 p.m. Saturday when the temperature was 63 degrees. The Australians wore long pants, with T-shirts under their bikini tops.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside. She wore a brooch given to her in 1948 ? the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said.

Outspoken U.S. goaltender Hope Solo isn't happy about former player Brandi Chastain's commentary on NBC, and she's tweeting about it.

At one point, Chastain pointed out that a defender's responsibilities are: "Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that's something that (U.S. defender) Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament."

After the game, Solo rattled off four tweets about Chastain. She told Chastain to "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."

"I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute," tweeted Solo, adding that she likes NBC soccer announcer Arlo White.

A choreographer is unhappy that his somber opening-ceremony segment was bypassed by NBC, which instead showed American viewers an interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

The segment was described as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death." But some in the British press have interpreted it as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks. Said choreographer Akram Khan, a Londoner: "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

NBC aired the ceremony on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes.

Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are less likely to die from the disease than from largely preventable conditions such as heart disease, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). It is the largest study to date that looks at causes of death among men with prostate cancer, and suggests that encouraging healthy lifestyle changes should play an important role in prostate cancer management.

"Our results are relevant for several million men living with prostate cancer in the United States," said first author Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at HSPH. "We hope this study will encourage physicians to use a prostate cancer diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage a healthier lifestyle, which could improve the overall health of men with prostate cancer, increasing both the duration and quality of their life."

The study was published July 25, 2012 in the Advance Access online Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer, affecting one in six men during their lifetime. While incidence of prostate cancer has greatly increased in the United States, Sweden, and other Western countries in recent decades, the likelihood that a newly diagnosed man in these countries will die from the disease has declined. The researchers attribute this to the widespread use of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which has resulted in a higher proportion of men diagnosed with lower-risk forms of the disease.

The researchers examined causes of death among prostate cancer cases recorded in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (over 490,000 men from 1973 to 2008) and the nationwide Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries (over 210,000 men from 1961 to 2008).

The results showed that during the study period, prostate cancer accounted for 52% of all reported deaths in Sweden and 30% of reported deaths in the United States among men with prostate cancer; however, only 35% of Swedish men and 16% of U.S. men diagnosed with prostate cancer died from this disease. In both populations, the risk of prostate cancer-specific death declined, while the risk of death from heart disease and non-prostate cancer remained constant. The five-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 29% in Sweden and 11% in the United States.

Death rates from prostate cancer varied by age and calendar year of diagnosis, with the highest number of deaths from the disease among men diagnosed at older ages and those diagnosed in the earlier years of the surveys (especially in the years before the introduction of PSA screening).

"Our study shows that lifestyle changes such as losing weight, increasing physical activity, and quitting smoking, may indeed have a greater impact on patients' survival than the treatment they receive for their prostate cancer," said senior author Hans-Olov Adami, professor of epidemiology at HSPH.

The Federal Government on Thursday moved to avert a nationwide fuel scarcity as it directed the Debt Management Office to pay marketers all subsidy claims that had been verified.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the claims would be paid as soon as the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency provided the supporting Sovereign Debt Notes.

She, however, did not disclose the total amount to be paid to the marketers.

The oil marketers, operating under the aegis of Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association, had threatened to go on strike if their claims were not paid by Thursday.

Specifically, they vowed to suspend fuel loading at the depots in Lagos and other parts of the country.

But the minister, in a statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Communication, Mr. Paul Nwabuiku, on Thursday, said there was no need for the marketers to go on strike since the government was already addressing the subsidy payment issue.

The statement reads, ?The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has directed the Debt Management Office to pay marketers with verified claims as soon as supporting Sovereign Debt Notes are provided by the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency.

?The directive is to reinforce the Federal Government?s determination to ensure that there is no disruption in fuel supplies across the country.?

The statement recalled that payments based on verified claims resumed after a meeting of the Federation Accounts Allocations Committee in June this year, and payments totalling N17bn were made.

It also said, ?To prevent overpayments, verification of claims is a cornerstone of the procedures adopted by the Federal Ministry of Finance for managing fuel subsidy payments.

?The minister clarified that following the report of the Presidential Committee headed by Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, it is clear that some marketers also owe government significant sums of money and that government expects that these will be paid.?

The minister also said that the review had produced a lot of useful details on what went wrong with the system and what needed to be done to ensure improvement.

The review process started in February when the Ministry of Finance and other relevant government agencies held a meeting with bankers and marketers at the instance of President Goodluck Jonathan.

This was followed by a session with the accounting and auditing firms to re-evaluate their work.

It said, based on the review, the services of the two audit and accounting firms responsible for certifying the documents and claims of the marketers before payment were terminated.

Subsequently, a committee was set up to verify oil subsidy claims, it added.

The Presidential Committee on Verification and Reconciliation of Fuel Subsidy Payment, in its report, which was submitted on Monday, revealed that 21 companies that participated in subsidy payments were found culpable of fraudulent claims.

The report said that N21bn was cleared leaving N382bn as the sum in contention, the basis for which the committee recommended the process of recovery.

Chris Wondolowski? He?s one of the All-Stars of lesser brilliance in the greater cultural stratosphere. Soccer fans know all about the San Jose Earthquakes prolific scorer, but the general public may stare past the man known as ?Wonder Wondo? as they tune in tonight.
