DETROIT While many might see the case for programs to prevent adolescent cigarette smoking as already made, a pair of Wayne State University researchers believes that due to increasingly challenging economic times, policymakers need to be reminded to continue allocating funding for such programs.

Xinguang Chen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, and Feng Lin, Ph.D., professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, have found a way to provide policymakers with some hard evidence.

Most adult smokers in the United States report trying their first cigarette before age 18, according to government statistics, with more than 80 percent of established smokers starting before high school graduation. Earlier initiation has been shown to be associated with greater smoking frequency and number of cigarettes smoked per day.

Only about 5 percent of established smokers ever quit completely, Chen said, making prevention in adolescence a critical and strategic priority for tobacco control.

"The number of smokers year to year at any given time is an accumulation of past experience," he said. "Our methodology has the power to glean that information from one cross-sectional survey, overcoming the limit to track people over time."

School-, community- and family-based prevention programs have been effective, he said, but evaluating their success at the national level has been a challenge because of the high cost associated with longitudinal data collection and blank groups for comparison.

"We get so much national survey data every year, but we cannot see the real impact of these programs, or get a feeling for the accumulation and meaning of smoking prevention knowledge they pass along," Chen said.

In "Exposure to School and Community Based Prevention Programs and Reductions in Cigarette Smoking Among Adolescents in the United States 2000-08," supported by funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health (grant No. R01 DA022730) and published recently in the journal Evaluation and Program Planning, Chen and Lin describe a methodology and an analytical approach capable of extracting longitudinal information from cross-sectional survey data.

Based on a probabilistic discrete event system, the method requires just one wave of data to assess behavior progression. It treats individuals in multiyear cross-sectional surveys as a series of snapshots of a stable system, overcoming the challenges to previous methods.

Chen and Lin's team examined data on youths age 12 to 17 from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. They found that fewer of those exposed to prevention programs started smoking, more of them quit if they did start and fewer ex-smokers resumed the habit.

WSU researchers also found that funding cuts made by states to smoking prevention programs from 2003 to 2005 affected those numbers adversely, Chen said, possibly because less money meant that fewer new school and community personnel were trained in how to conduct smoking prevention programs.

Researchers noted a time lag of one to two years between the funding cuts and behavior reversals.

The latter point takes on renewed importance with the beginning of an economic recovery, Chen said. Because state spending on prevention has increased slowly since the time of the cuts, he expects smoking startup, quit and relapse numbers to reverse course.

Chen realizes that policymakers have a number of health-related issues to consider in the funding allocation process, but he said that given the demonstrated, widespread ill effects of smoking on rates of cancer and heart disease, smoking prevention should remain at the top of the priority list because of the health care costs that can be avoided.

"It's an investment," he said. "Given the financial difficulties the nation is facing, policymakers should consider the potentially powerful impact offered by relatively low-cost nationwide substance use prevention campaigns."

Supersonic Flying Wing Nabs $100,000 from NASA

An aircraft that resembles a four-point ninja star could go into supersonic mode by simply turning 90 degrees in midair. The unusual "flying wing" concept has won $100,000 in NASA funding to trying becoming a reality for future passenger jet travel.

The supersonic, bidirectional flying wing idea comes from a team headed by Ge-Cheng Zha, an aerospace engineer at the University of Miami. He said the fuel-efficient aircraft could reach supersonic speeds without the thunderclap sound produced by a sonic boom ? a major factor that previously limited where the supersonic Concorde passenger jet could fly over populated land masses.

"I am hoping to develop an environmentally friendly and economically viable airplane for supersonic civil transport in the next 20 to 30 years," Zha said. "Imagine flying from New York to Tokyo in four hours instead of 15 hours."

The U.S. military's B-2 Spirit stealth bomber that debuted in 1989 represents the only previously successful flying wing aircraft, even though experimental flying wings flew before then. Zha's bidirectional flying wing kicks the general concept up a notch by essentially laying two flying wings on top of one another at a 90 degree angle, so that the aircraft faces one way for subsonic flight and rotates another way for supersonic flight. [Supersonic Biplane Design Stops Sonic Booms]

The midair transformation allows the aircraft to fly in its most fuel-efficient modes at both subsonic and supersonic speeds, Zha explained. Jet engines located on top of the aircraft in concept illustrations appear to rotate independently of the aircraft so that they can always point forward in flight.

Such midair spinning might sound unpleasant for people riding the aircraft. But a five-second rotation would only cause pilots and passengers to experience a "g-force" just one-tenth the force of gravity ? less than what airline passengers experience during takeoff.

[Slideshow: First flying car completes test flight]

NASA liked the idea enough to give Zha and his colleagues a $100,000 grant from the Innovative Advanced Concepts program. But the U.S. space agency does not expect such funded concepts to fly for at least another 20 years or so.

"We are inventing the ways in which next-generation aircraft and spacecraft will change the world and inspiring Americans to take bold steps," said Michael Gazarik, director of NASA's Space Technology Program.

The bidirectional flying wing aircraft could also lead to the first supersonic drones soaring over the U.S. homeland or distant battlefields. Zha previously pitched the robotic military version to the U.S. Air Force at an unmanned aerial systems conference in 2009.

Both the U.S. government and aircraft manufacturers also have begun pushing for hypersonic aircraft capable of flying more than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5). Aerospace giant EADS displayed one passenger jet concept at the Paris Air Show in 2011, but aviation experts suggested a ticket to board the flight would cost at least $10,000.

The U.S. has already begun carrying out tests of unmanned hypersonic aircraft, but with mixed results. A U.S. Air Force test of the unmanned X-51A WaveRider ended prematurely when the aircraft plunged into the Pacific Ocean on Aug. 14.

Editor's Note: The original version of this story mistakenly said that Ge-Cheng Zha is an aerospace engineer at Florida State University. He is an aerospace engineer at the University of Miami.

Finding Tips For Personal Finance?

To be on top of your personal financial situation, you don?t need to be an expert in financial planning. You can improve your finances and increase the amount of money you have in the bank with simple tips for managing your finances.

TIP! Small changes can have a big impact on your budget. Making coffee at home instead of stopping at the local coffee shop can add up to a big savings.

If might take you some more time, but it can save money by using ATMs from your bank instead of paying fees. Financial institutions often levy hefty per-transaction and monthly fees for using the ATM of other banks, and these fees can add up very quickly.

If you are going to invest your money, make sure you aren?t hit with massive fees. Long term investing brokers charge fees for their services. These fees majorly affect your total return. Do not use a broker that asks for too much in commissions and avoid high management costs in general.

Credit Card

Make sure your credit card is payed through an automatic system via your bank. Even though you may not be able to pay off your credit card balance each month, at least making the minimum payment on time will establish a positive credit record. You are sure to make your payments on time every month if you have an automatic payment set up through your bank. Any month that you have some extra money, you can always make an additional payment on the credit card account.

TIP! You should always get rid of your financial documents in a safe manner. To that end, a shredder makes a worthwhile investment.

If someone would like to make a purchase but the cost is too high to buy immediately, it might be possible to involve his or her family. If everyone in the family would benefit from another television, then it would be smart for everyone to chip in.

It?s true, anyone can improve their financial lot. By being sensible, and using the handy financial advice in this article, you will be able to create a workable budget, reduce debt, increase your wealth, and finally be in control

Lovely Offers Photo-Based Apartment Search Results for Quickly Identifying an Awesome New PadCraigslist's apartment search still sucks, but thankfully there are third-party developers out there making it better (even if Craigslist doesn't like it). Previously mentioned Lovely is dedicated to making the apartment finding process easier, and this weekend they built a new search tool to help you find a great place with photo-based search results.

All you need to do is choose a city and a neighborhood to get started. From there you can narrow down your options by choosing the number of bedrooms you want in your apartment and a price range. As you make your selections, Lovely will provide you with a grid of photos depicting the various apartments available to you. From there you can click on anything appealing for more information and view the entire listing if you choose. Double-star system hosts planets

A new study shows that planetary systems can form and survive in the chaotic environment around pairs of stars.

A team reports in Science the discovery of two planets orbiting a pair of stars - a so-called binary.

Gravitational disturbances generated by stellar pairs are thought to be very severe for any orbiting planets.

Nasa's Kepler space telescope found two small planets around a pair of low-mass stars.

Such systems have particular significance for science fiction fans. In the Star Wars films, Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine orbits a binary star.

The planetary system, known as Kepler-47, is located roughly 5,000 light-years away, in the constellation Cygnus.

It contains a pair of stars whizzing around each other every 7.5 days. One star is Sun-like, while the other is about one-third the size of its neighbour and 175 times fainter.

Circling the stars is an inner planet about three times larger in diameter than the Earth, and an outer planet that is just slightly larger than Uranus.

Kepler Space Telescope

  • Stares fixedly at a patch corresponding to 1/400th of the sky
  • Looks at more than 155,000 stars
  • Has so far found 2,321 candidate planets
  • Among them are 207 Earth-sized planets, 10 of which are in the "habitable zone" where liquid water can exist

The inner planet - dubbed Kepler-47b - takes 49 days to complete an orbit, while the outer planet - Kepler-47c - takes 303 days.

The orbit of the outer planet places it in the so-called "habitable zone", the region around a star where it is neither too cold nor too hot for liquid water to persist on the surface of a planet.

While the outer world is probably a gas-giant planet and thus not suitable for life, its discovery establishes that these "circumbinary" planets can, and do, exist in habitable zones.

A handful of circumbinary planets have been discovered before, but this is the first known planetary system around a pair of stars.

It is thought that gravitational perturbations generated by the binary could either toss planets out of the system, into one of the stars, or fling them into devastating head-on collisions.

"Kepler-47 shows us that typical planetary architectures, with multiple planets in co-planar orbits, can form around two stars," said co-author Joshua Carter, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

"We've learned that circumbinary planets can be like the planets in our own Solar System, but with two suns."

Prof William Welsh, from San Diego State University, who presented the work at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) meeting in Beijing on behalf of the Kepler Science Team, said: "The thing I find most exciting... is the potential for habitability in a circumbinary system.

"Kepler-47c is not likely to harbour life, but if it had large moons, those would be very interesting worlds."

The Kepler space telescope discovered the planets by measuring the tell-tale drop in brightness they cause when they transit (eclipse) their host stars.

Spectroscopic data from telescopes at McDonald Observatory in Texas enabled the absolute sizes of the planets to be measured.

Redux Partners With Samsung, Sony, And LG, Putting Its Video Discovery App On 40M Connected TVs

Redux_Logo_White-300x231Nearly one-third of connected TV users already watch online video through those devices, and daily usage rates have grown 10x in a very short period of time. But it's not as easy as just flipping on the TV and switching channels: Instead, connected TV viewers are usually forced to try to navigate a series of apps and channel menus to hunt for something to watch. To solve this, video discovery startup Redux has been making a big bet on connected TV over the past year or so, creating apps and user interfaces that are designed to make streaming video as seamless as watching regular broadcast or cable TV. Last year, Redux launched an app for Google TV, which made streaming video more of a TV-like viewing experience on devices with that OS. The app has been pretty popular so far, ranking as one of the top-downloaded apps on the Google TV marketplace. But customers still had to download it. Since then, it's been working to partner with some big-time consumer electronics manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, and LG, and as a result, it will have its apps and technology preloaded into a ton of their smart TVs.

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

11 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

New Hampshire Home Care, New Hampshire - Recovering From A ...

Having a stroke and going through the recovery process is a traumatic time in a person's life. The recovery time can be long, hard and grueling. Family members who are around to help the stroke patient recover will find that it is a very challenging experience.

If you have a loved one who is recovering from a stroke, you need to do whatever it takes to get them back on track. The best way to do this is contact a home care agency. At New Hampshire Parkinson's Care, client recovery is handled with both dignity and care. When a patient is discharged from the hospital and goes home, stroke recovery can begin. Some changes can be made easily in the home to accommodate the incoming patient. If the patient is confined to a wheelchair, having doors that are automatic will help the patient get around easier and more conveniently. Arranging the furniture so that the patient can come and go in and out of rooms is also helpful.

Individuals who have been through a stroke get tired of being limited in the things they can do and where they can go. They often feel cooped up inside the house and they love to go outdoors even if it's just for some fresh air. If you are not able to assist your loved one in moving in and out of the home, then consult the help of a New Hampshire Home Care aid. If the person who is recovering from the stroke is confined to a wheelchair, ramps would help make it easier for them to go outside. Adding strong handrails on the stairs will help the stroke patient get up and down much easier. All these little things may seem simple but they are truly a lot of help for a recovering patient.

Rehab for stroke patients should begin very soon after the patient is released from the hospital. Consult your New Hampshire Elder Care aid on what type of help family members can offer. During this time, family members can go with the patient to rehab to offer their support and help them recover quickly. Recovering from a stroke is not going to take a day or a week or a month of effort. It is going to take full-time, continuous effort with the patient and his or her family and friends. A stroke patient should never feel like losing hope because while consistent rehab is going on and there are medications to take, recovery can happen. It just takes time, effort, and will.

Caring for a senior who has suffered from a stroke can be a difficult task; our caregivers can give you the support you need.http://www.newhampshirehomecareassistance.com

Dozens feared drowned off Libya/Egypt coast

Egypt on Monday launched search and rescue operations with the help of Libyan coastal authorities after dozens of people were feared drowned when their boat capsized, officials said.

Three bodies were recovered and five people plucked alive from the Mediterranean near the maritime border between the two countries, Egyptian security officials said, adding that Libya had alerted Egypt of the disaster.

The search for survivors was continuing in the Burdi area, the officials in Cairo said.

In Libya, the state news agency Lana reported that the boat was carrying around 40 illegal migrants and capsized off Libya's east coast near the border with Egypt, with only one passenger surviving the tragedy.

"All the migrants who were on board died, except for one person who survived and was able to alert local authorities and inform them of the tragedy," Lana said, quoting a local official.

It was not immediately clear who the passengers of the boat were but they are widely believed to be asylum seekers trying to get to Europe in search of jobs and a better life.

Lana did not give the nationalities of the passengers but said the boat sunk some three kilometres (almost two miles) off the Libya coast.

In April last year, scores of people went missing at sea after a tiny boat carrying more than 200 African migrants fleeing unrest-hit Libya capsized in the night in three-metre-high waves.

Libya has been traditionally a launchpad for African refugees and migrants seeking to make an illegal run across the sea to Europe, with many landing in Italy.

Migrants and refugees often travel in rickety and overcrowded wooden fishing boats and there have been several accidents at sea.

How To Use Podcast Directories To Promote Your Online Business ...

Author: Toby Russell | Total views: 87 Comments: 0
Word Count: 690 Date:

Here's just another marketing method to get your teeth into. Podcasts I hear you say with trepidation, "what are they, how do they work and how do I make them?" All valid questions and concerns but its like so many things relating to the internet that at first glace look pretty scary and the initial reaction is "I can't do that!" And sure this article just covers the opportunity in a brief way & you'll need to do a bit more research, but honestly once you get your head around it - you'll wonder why you didn't do it before, trust me and read on??

What's a Podcast? A podcast is an internet channel used to communicate. It's like a niche-specific radio station. Podcast directories are similar to article directories, but people subscribe to them. When you submit your podcasts here, they go out to all the directory's subscribers.

The cool thing about podcast directories is that there's a built-in audience who are already interested in your niche. You can use these directories to show your expertise, advertise your products or services, brand yourself and generate leads. If you do it right and offer high quality information, you'll have a community of loyal listeners tuning in every week.

How To Create Podcasts

To make quality podcasts, all you need is a computer, a microphone and some type of recording software. Record your podcast and save it to MP3 format; now, it's ready to submit.

You can use your articles or other web content as a script. Or you can use it as an outline and just talk about your topic. The important thing is just to offer quality information and make it valuable for your listeners.

Each directory has different submission rules, but most of them allow you to create a description. Optimize that for your keywords and make it something that will draw them in. Some directories work like social networking sites, so you can interact with other users and create communities and groups.

When you're looking for directories to use, be sure to read their terms of use because each is different.

Tips For Creating Great Podcasts

To make a good podcast, all you really need to do is talk. That's it. But, I'd recommend including some intro music and maybe outro music. This kind of brands your podcasts and also makes them smoother. It's kind of abrupt when it just suddenly starts with somebody talking.

Once you've got your podcast action going, stick to your schedule and be consistent. Just like a radio show, podcasts are usually daily, weekly, or monthly. Before you even get started, decide on this schedule based on how committed you're going to be. Your listeners will be expecting regular shows.

One great way to create excellent high-quality podcasts with little fuss and bother is to interview people in your niche. It's a win-win situation - interviewing a known name in your niche will get people tuning in to check out your podcast; and the person you're interviewing gets some exposure and a chance to build their authority out of the deal.

Finally, market your podcasts. Let everybody know on your list, website and social media sites when the next show is going to be. Once you get started making podcasts, it's a lot of fun!

And here's a list of the best podcast directories to get you started:

Podcasting News' Podcast Directory - www.podcastingnews.com/forum/links.php Podcast Alley - www.podcastalley.com/ Odeo.com - www.odeo.com iPodder.org - www.ipodder.org/ PodcastPickle - www.podcastpickle.com/ Digital Podcast - www.digitalpodcast.com/ PodcastDirectory.com - podcastdirectory.com/ iPodderX - ipodderx.com/ Learn Out Loud - www.learnoutloud.com/Podcast-Directory Public Radio Fan - www.publicradiofan.com/podcasts.html

So there you are, get stuck and get podcasting, just another marketing avenue you really should be utilising, let us know how you get on?

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Researching the methods required to succeed in network marketing is essential. These tips can help you to spread the message of your network marketing.

When you have learned from your mistakes, you are in an excellent position to move forward to success. It is crucial to admit to your failures and understand how to correct them. A better understanding of how and why you failed lets you know which methods are not working, so you can focus on using the ones that do.

There are lots of people who have the desire to share the things that they?ve learned in network marketing, that is why it is important that you are always ready to listen to what they have to say. One of the best ways to do this nowadays is through podcasts. You are likely to find some interesting and applicable advice if you sample a few of the different casts available.

TIP! Be honest with yourself about your intentions. Perhaps you are only interested in approaching network marketing in a casual, informal way.

When researching the network marketing company options, choose one with products that are of personal interest to you. Your own personal like or dislike for a product will show to potential customers, and affect your selling ability.

Create a monthly budget. If you want your business to be running to the best of its ability, then you need to know what sort of monetary investment is going to be required on your part. Remember that you cannot skimp on the budget if you want to see a profit. If you cannot invest money into your business or you are not willing to, you will not get far as a business owner.

Make it a point to find out how popular your users are in their networks. When presenting your products, make it so they would be happy to let their friends in on your products. If you?re fairly certain that someone isn?t going to purchase any of your products, don?t bother talking to him or her unless that person has his own extensive network.

TIP! Help from Internet sources like blogs and network marketing forums can be a smart way to keep yourself up-to-date and informed about the industry. Forums are a great place to start as you will find field experts, as well as beginners like yourself, who will be looking to share their real life network marketing experiences.

Keep your meeting to 60 minutes or less. The length of a business meeting often indicates how complicated the topic approached will be. By abbreviating your meeting, you can show your interested client that your system is straightforward.

Patience is required at first but you will see result grow exponentially when success does occur. A lot of amateurs allow themselves to become discouraged if they do not meet their goals early in the game. When you first begin your network marketing campaign, it will be slow; however, this is the most crucial time so don?t give up. The networking builds slowly over time and will eventually gather speed over the long term.

If you have decided to embark upon a network marketing campaign, it is important to consider the overall compensation package that is available to you and whom ever you have partnered or teamed up with. Being aware of the compensation that is included in your agreement will help you figure out if it is worth the time you are investing or if you should look into other opportunities.

TIP! If you truly want to be a successful network marketer, you really must want to help others succeed, as well. If your efforts at marketing are geared towards helping people with your offerings, your profits will rise.

The most important thing you can do in network marketing is to remember that it is a business, and it should be treated like one. If you expect to work just a few hours a week and earn a lot of money, you will not be successful. Network marketing, like any other field, requires a significant time and work investment. Keep a promise to yourself of working hard everyday, and that will make you a successful network marketer.

Consistently use a ongoing email database to achieve success with network marketing. It is possible to build or purchase a marketing list, and you want it to be as large as possible to ensure the success of your business.

TIP! Follow what others are doing to succeed. Look to the organization?s leaders for inspiration and motivation.

To succeed in network marketing, you must learn the most effective methods and then apply them to your business. If you know how to market by networking, you will see a rise in your profits. Use this advice to make your network marketing message more far-reaching

Electronic cigarettes do not damage the heart, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? Smoking is the most preventable risk factor for cardiac and lung disease and is expected to cause 1 billion deaths during the 21st century. Electronic cigarettes have been marketed in recent years as a safer habit for smokers, with several millions of people already using them worldwide.

Electronic cigarettes simulate the effect of smoking by producing an inhaled vapor. The device consists of a battery, a cartridge containing liquid and a heating element which gets warm and evaporates the liquid. Laboratory analyses of the liquids show that they are less toxic than regular cigarettes. Most studies have found no nitrosamines, but even in studies where nitrosamines were found, the levels detected were 500-1400 times less than the amount present in one tobacco cigarette. This means that electronic cigarettes must be used daily for 4-12 months to get the amount of nitrosamines present in a single tobacco cigarette.

Since heart disease is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in smokers, with 40% of deaths in smokers due to coronary artery disease alone, the research team decided to perform the first clinical study of the acute effects of electronic cigarettes on cardiac function. They decided to compare their results with the acute effects of regular cigarettes on cardiac function since electronic cigarettes are marketed to smokers only, as an alternative habit.

Previous studies from the research group and several others have shown that acute smoking inhalation produces significant defects in myocardial function. This indicates that subclinical dysfunction is already present in apparently healthy asymptomatic young people who smoke tobacco cigarettes. The goal was to evaluate whether these signs of preclinical disease appear in a similar population after using electronic cigarettes.

The researchers measured myocardial function in 20 healthy young daily smokers aged 25-45 years before and after smoking one tobacco cigarette and 22 daily electronic cigarette users of similar age before and after using the device for 7 minutes.

Experienced users of electronic cigarettes were studied because they use the device more intensively than first-time users. Although both groups were of equal age, users of electronic cigarettes had a 44% higher lifetime tobacco smoking exposure compared to current smokers.

For the electronic cigarettes, a commercially available liquid with a nicotine concentration of 11mg/ml was used (NOBACCO USA Mix). This was tested by an independent toxicology laboratory and found to contain no nitrosamines or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Myocardial function was examined using cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography) and hemodynamic measurements (blood pressure and heart rate).

The researchers found that smoking one tobacco cigarette led to significant acute myocardial dysfunction but electronic cigarettes had no acute adverse effects on cardiac function. Smoking a tobacco cigarette had important hemodynamic consequences, with significant increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and in heart rate. In contrast, electronic cigarettes produced only a slight elevation in diastolic blood pressure. Dr Farsalinos said: "This is an indication that although nicotine was present in the liquid used (11mg/ml), it is absorbed at a lower rate compared to regular cigarette smoking."

The echocardiography examination focused on the function of the left ventricle, the part of the heart that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs (filling or diastolic phase) and then delivers the blood to the whole body (pumping or systolic phase). The investigators found significant defects in the diastolic phase of left ventricular function after smoking one cigarette, with four echocardiographic parameters indicating worsening function. In contrast, none of the echocardiographic parameters showed any significant worsening in subjects after using the electronic cigarette. "Diastolic dysfunction is very important because it is usually the first defect that is detected before any clinically-evident cardiac disease develops," said Dr Farsalinos.

He added: "It is too early to say whether the electronic cigarette is a revolution in tobacco harm reduction but the potential is there. It is the only available product that deals with both the chemical (nicotine delivery) and psychological (inhaling and exhaling 'smoke', holding it, etc) addiction to smoking, laboratory analyses indicate that it is significantly less toxic and our study has shown no significant defects in cardiac function after acute use."

Dr Farsalinos continued: "More clinical studies need to be done before suggesting that this is a revolutionary product. However, considering the extreme hazards associated with cigarette smoking, currently available data suggest that electronic cigarettes are far less harmful and substituting tobacco with electronic cigarettes may be beneficial to health."

92% Safety Not Guaranteed

Question: If you could go back in time, what time would you return to and why? Normally I answer, or vaguely answer, my own questions in these reviews but I?m not going to on this one. I am not an overly nostalgic person unless it has to do with a film or a band. Plus, after seeing Safety Not Guaranteed this past weekend, I learned a valuable lesson. Sorry if this confuses anyone but you will just have to see Safety Not Guaranteed to understand what I am referring to?.or trying to, at least. I have wanted to see this film for a long time. There was just something about the story that drew me to it ? not too long ago I even posted the preview on here; and I save those posts usually for films that I think will be interesting, unique or that tell a story that will move me. This one did, not drastically, but enough to get me out of my writer?s block (fingers crossed) and make me contemplate parts of my life. That?s what I want from most films, art, books, etc?an opportunity to think; notice something you hadn?t before; and look upon an idea with a fresh perspective, etc? Safety Not Guaranteed took on an age-old idea: looking back on your past with regret and hoping you can change things so you wouldn?t be unhappy now. And the filmmakers made a charming, perfectly decent film that will just make you smile. Plus, they added the idea of time travel. Who wouldn?t like that, right? So, I ask again, would you want to go back in time and why? For most, I believe, the reasoning will involve another person: a partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, parent or someone with whom you hurt or they did something that haunts you, still. We all make mistakes. Mistakes are thrust upon us. We fall in love with the wrong person, or the right person, and hearts get broken no matter what. Also, we can be cruel to another. Admit it ? we have ALL been there. We are human. Safety Not Guaranteed represented several aspects of people?s regret and/or searching for the cure to change their current situation. And I think most will be able to relate. Now the next question(s): Could we fix it? Should we fix it? Would we be better off if we changed these brief, few moments of the past? Or are we where we are supposed to be? Thinking about regrets is enough to drive you a little mad. And that?s how the actor in this film, Mark Duplass? character, is portrayed. Someone who must be insane because he puts a classified ad in the paper requesting a partner go back in time with him. He declares it will be dangerous and your safety will not be guaranteed. His ad intrigues a magazine editor ? enough to send a writer and two interns to check the story out. There are a couple other character in this film that display the same sort of desire to change their present by reaching towards the past: The young intern, Darius, played by Aubrey Plaza and her boss, Jeff, played by Jake. M. Johnson. Both these characters represented the vast differences on why someone would want to go back in time. I liked both characters, a lot. In fact, Jeff was one that kept the comedy going in this film. He?s the type of guy you don?t want to like but he evokes sympathy when you aren?t expecting. Darius is a sarcastic girl that has a deep, hidden secret on why she is unhappy now. As for the rest of the story, no more details. Just go see this film. It is slated as a comedy, and it was absolutely funny at parts but it is not slap stick or a joke every few minutes type of film. The humor is subtle and well placed. Safety Not Guaranteed showed real humor, the humor we all have in our lives. The absurdity that is ever present ? that?s what makes it a comedy. However, I would categorize this as a drama as well. And that?s a compliment. Bottom line: Just give me a good story, tell it well and with respect (especially for the audience), and you?ve got a fan in me. Safety Not Guaranteed did all three. Well done! My favorite thing: There might too many things to list here. I just really, really liked this film. Okay, I laughed OUT LOUD when Jeff raises his fists in the air. His reaction to what was happening just kept me smiling and smiling. My least favorite thing: I got nothing this time. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Big Beach Films, 2012 Genre: Comedy Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake M. Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni, Jeff Garlin and Kristen Bell. Rays blank A's, only 2 1/2 games behind Yankees

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:31 p.m. ET Aug. 23, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The surging Tampa Bay Rays have discovered a simple formula: It's hard to lose when you don't give up any runs.

Alex Cobb pitched a four-hitter for his first major league shutout and the Rays beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0 on Thursday night to pull within 2 1/2 games of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Matt Joyce hit a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning against Tyson Ross, hastily called up from the minors to pitch in place of suspended Oakland starter Bartolo Colon.

After the big inning, it was easy for Cobb.

"All the pressure goes away," he said. "You don't have to be fine, you can just go ahead and attack hitters. Once I got up by five, my main thought was to go as deep as I could and make them hit fastballs."

Cobb (8-8) struck out eight and walked two in his second career complete game, both this season. He bounced back from a poor outing against the Los Angeles Angels to win for the fourth time in five starts.

"Nothing worked the last time. And to his credit, he just threw that in the trash can and did this tonight," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

It was the 14th win in 17 games for the Rays and their seventh shutout since July 19. They have pitched 13 shutouts this season, second-most in the majors behind the Angels (15).

Cobb threw a called third strike past Yoenis Cespedes for the final out. As the Rays poured onto the field for handshakes, a group of starting pitchers jumped together and bumped shoulders in excitement.

Matt Moore banged into Cobb and sent him tumbling onto the mound, minus his cap. Still clutching the ball in his glove, Cobb climbed back to his feet and smiled.

It's the closest the Rays have been to first place since they were 2 1/2 out before games of June 16.

Oakland dropped into a tie with Baltimore and Detroit for the AL's second wild-card spot, 2 1/2 games behind the Rays. The teams finish their three-game series Saturday and get a rare Sunday off because the Republican National Convention begins Monday in Tampa.

The A's did not have a travel day after beating Minnesota at home on Wednesday afternoon. They were shut out for the 15th time this season.

"We just couldn't figure (Cobb) out tonight," manager Bob Melvin said. "He was throwing chase-fastballs to us. Every time we were looking for a fastball he threw a breaking ball, and every time we were looking for a breaking ball he threw a fastball, so he was pretty unpredictable tonight."

Luke Scott also doubled for the Rays in the fifth against Ross (2-9), called up from Triple-A Sacramento when Colon received a 50-game suspension Wednesday for testing positive for testosterone. The Rays batted around in the big inning, which also included RBI singles by Sam Fuld and Evan Longoria.

Ryan Roberts broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly.

Ross, making his first start for the A's since June 28, pitched six-plus innings. He gave up nine hits while striking out six.

He will be sent back to Sacramento to work out of the bullpen, and the A's plan to bring him back up when rosters expand in September.

"Now I've just got to move forward," Ross said. "Learn as much as I can about relieving, and be ready come September. I'm excited about the opportunity. Out of the `pen, I think I have a chance to help this team win some games."

Stephen Drew had two hits for Oakland, including a fourth-inning single that snapped an 0-for-22 slide. It was his first hit for the A's since he was acquired from Arizona in a trade.

Cobb allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs in 2 2-3 innings at Los Angeles on Saturday night, the only time this month a Rays pitcher has given up more than four runs. The Rays came back from an 8-0 deficit to win that game and take Cobb off the hook.

"It's great to see a teammate go out there and come back from struggling and really carry the team like he did tonight," Joyce said. "I'm really happy for him and really proud of him."

NOTES: Moore, scheduled to start Friday night against Jarrod Parker, is 4-0 with a 1.16 ERA in his last five starts. ... Melvin said INF Brandon Inge (sprained right shoulder) is ready to start a minor league rehab assignment with Sacramento. ... Athletics RHP A.J. Griffin (right shoulder) allowed three runs and four hits over 2 1-3 innings in his first rehab start Wednesday night for Sacramento.
