CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A local student at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro has died after becoming sick during an on-campus event, university officials said Saturday.
Jawuan Paul Trotter, 21, of Charlotte, was attending an event for students in the university?s Memorial Student Union when he became ill. Trotter stepped out into a hallway where he then became unresponsive, said university spokeswoman Nicole Pride.
Pride said campus police and then paramedics administered CPR on Trotter before he was taken to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. He died Saturday morning, officials say.
Pride said officials don?t know what led to Trotter?s illness. The college said he had been attending the Union Takeover, a free event for students that helps to kick off the start of the school year.
?Our hearts and prayers go out to the Trotter family,? Chancellor Harold Martin said in a news release. ?The Aggie family is deeply saddened by this tragic loss.?
The university said Trotter was a freshman who had not yet declared a major.
Tribute messages to Trotter and his family were pouring out on social media on Saturday. The university said it would provide counseling services for students and employees this weekend and in the coming days.
