Savannah Guthrie Debuts as Today Show Host; Ann Curry Not Mentioned Once
If you tuned in to NBC's Today for the first time Friday and observed Savannah Guthrie alongside Matt Lauer, you'd never have known Ann Curry existed.
The morning show opened with Guthrie and Lauer behind the desk, minus the usual voiceover announcing the anchors or graphics identifying them.
Matt and Savannah simply launched right into the news.
Even at 9 a.m., when Savannah Guthrie typically handles the bulk of the show's content, there was zero mention of the shakeup, which became official with Ann Curry's farewell speech on Today not even 24 hours prior.
Instead, she, Lauer and Al Roker segued from a Maroon 5 performance to local news, weather and Guthrie running solo on the first segment of the hour.
She later was joined by Roker and Natalie Morales, who was reportedly in the running to replace Curry (which could have led to Matt Lauer's divorce).
Though Guthrie (pictured) is presumed to be Curry’s successor, especially after what we witnessed today, NBC has yet to make an official announcement.

Floods kill 27, 900 000 displaced in Northeast India
INTERNATIONAL NEWS - At least 27 people have died and 900,000 others have been forced to leave their homes as monsoon rains swamp wide areas of the northeastern Indian state of Assam, officials said on Thursday.
A state government spokesman said 21 of Assam's 27 districts were hit by flash floods which began last weekend as the rains lashed the tea and oil-rich Indian state.
"So far, 27 people have died in separate incidents including five who were killed when their boat sank," Assam Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka told AFP in Guwahati, the state's largest city.
He also said the Brahmaputra river was overflowing its banks in many places.
Deka said an estimated 900,000 people had been displaced from their homes due to the flooding.
"Most of the displaced people have been forced to take shelter on raised platforms and in tarpaulin tents," Deka added.
"All major rivers are running menacingly high with breaches reported in many places," added Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as rescuers set up 1,500 temporary shelters for people stranded.
In nearby Bangladesh, the death toll from a series of flash floods and landslides rose above 100 on Thursday.
The annual monsoon, crucial to India's food production and economic growth, arrived over the tropical country earlier in the month.
Indian agriculture gets 60 percent of its precipitation from the rains and a bad monsoon can spell financial disaster for the country's 235 million farmers.

George?s mother tries again and again to get George to bark.? But each time he tries to bark, he makes a different noise.? First he meows like a cat.? And then he quacks like a duck.? Then he oinks like a pig and even moos like a cow.? Unable to figure out what?s wrong, George?s mother takes him to the vet to get checked out.? The vet tells George to bark.? Again, George meows instead of barks.? So the vet puts on a pair of gloves and reaches down inside of George.? To everyone?s surprise, the vet pulls a cat out of George.? The vet says again for George to bark.? This time, George quacks.? So again, the vet reaches in.? This time he pulls out a duck.? Then again, the vet repeats his procedure, and pulls out a pig and then a cow.? Finally after all the animals are out, the vet once more tells George to bark, and he does.? George?s mother is so excited that George can bark that she takes him out and tells him to bark for everyone.? Much to her surprise, instead of barking, George simply says, ?Hello.??

Polaroid instant cameras that spit the image out of front. i do know after I was growing up we always thought watching those pictures develop was the good thing ever. Polaroid has a brand new instant camera called the Z2300 Instant Camera that may be a modern version of that 80s instant camera.
The Z2300 has an integrated ZINK Technology printer contained in the camera so that it will take digital photos, after which print a 2 x 3-inch hard copy immediately. The camera too can upload images to social media sites akin to Facebook. The camera is available in two colors, including black and white.
The camera resolution is 10-megapixels and has a 3-inch LCD at the back so that you can preview the picture before you print. The printer integrated into the camera uses no ink. The paper the ZINK printer uses is a composite material that has cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded in paper. The printer uses heat to activate and colorize the crystals to deliver a transparent and colourful print in lower than a minute. The Z2300 camera is priced at $159.99. The two x 3? Police: 6 Shiites killed in attack in Pakistan
QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? Police say suspected Sunni militants fired a rocket and sprayed gunfire at a bus carrying Shiite pilgrims in southwest Pakistan, killing at least six people.
Police officer Hamid Shakeel says the bus was traveling from Iran to Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's Baluchistan province, when it was attacked Thursday.
Shakeel says the bus was carrying around 40 passengers, and more than a dozen were wounded.
Pakistan has a long history of conflict between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

Schweinsteiger ready for semifinal against Italy

GDANSK, Poland (AP) -Germany central midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will be available to play in the European Championship semifinals against Italy on Thursday.
Schweinsteiger has complained of a lingering ankle injury and had raised doubts about his fitness. But coach Joachim Loew said Tuesday all of his players will be ready to face Italy in Warsaw, including Schweinsteiger.
"He is the team's emotional leader, he thinks a lot and asks a lot of questions, he has matured enormously over the past two years," Loew said. "He's very important for our team. We need him on the field."
Schweinsteiger tore a ligament in his right ankle in February and said Sunday the injury hadn't healed properly. The Bayern Munich player has started all four matches and made some uncharacteristic bad passes in the quarterfinal against Greece.
"Bastian is self-critical, he knows what his mistakes were and they won't happen again," Loew said.
Loew, who has tinkered with his lineup and changed the three-man forward line in the 4-2 win over Greece, did not rule out another reshuffle.
"Italy is a completely different caliber. I may change one or two things," Loew said.
As always, Loew revealed no details. Veteran striker Miroslav Klose started in favor of Mario Gomez against Greece. Klose said Tuesday he expected to play against Italy.
Loew also used Marco Reus and Andre Schuerrle as his attacking midfielders, replacing Thomas Mueller and Lukas Podolski, respectively.
"We have very ambitious players and even those who do not play bring a lot of quality to training," said Loew, who likes to remain unpredictable when it comes to Germany's lineups.
"But our philosophy, our game will not change," he said.

Coffee Reduces Risk of Heart Failure
Hey java drinkers, that coffee buzz you love so much may also help prevent heart failure, according to a new study published in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation Heart Failure.
While many believe coffee drinking may be dangerous to the heart, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston said moderate consumption of your daily jo could be beneficial.
The scientists analyzed five prospective studies, which included more than 140,000 men and women, that related to coffee consumption and heart risk. Four of the studies were based in Sweden, and one was conducted in Finland. They found that those who drank a moderate amount of coffee daily, defined as the equivalent of two 8-ounce American cups per day, may experience protective benefits against heart failure by as much as 11 percent.
The scientists didn't account for the strength of the coffee, but the drink tends to be made weaker in the U.S. than in Europe. They also didn't account for caffeinated versus decaffeinated coffee, though most people in Northern Europe consume a caffeinated form of the beverage.
Low levels of coffee consumption were not associated with a positive or negative effect on heart failure risk, but more than four to five cups of regular coffee consumption were associated with a higher risk.
More than half of American adults drink some form of coffee each day, according to the National Coffee Association, and caffeine is the most frequently consumed stimulant in the world.
Start Your Day Off Right With a Cup of Coffee Watch VideoSeveral studies have found that coffee reduces the risk of several medical conditions, including stroke, depression, dementia and several other cancers, but Dr. Murray Mittleman, senior study author and director of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said less is known about the impact of coffee on heart failure, which affects nearly 5.8 million Americans.
Mittleman said coffee has received a bad reputation in the past for its influence on the heart because animal studies have shown that drinking caffeinated coffee is associated with acutely raised blood pressure.
"Since high blood pressure is a risk factor for many types of cardiovascular disease, researchers assumed that coffee would be harmful, but several studies have shown that although there is an increase in blood pressure shortly after consumption, there are health benefits over the long-term," said Mittleman.
"Coffee contains many active compounds, including antioxidants that may explain how coffee lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes, and in turn, may lower the risk of developing heart failure," he continued.
The American Heart Association currently recommends that heart failure patients drink no more than one to two cups of coffee or other caffeinated beverages per day.
This study seems to find through association that moderate consumption is "relatively harmless," said Dr. Arthur Klatsky, a cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. "People who are at risk for heart failure who are moderate coffee drinkers should not be told to abstain."
Dr. Clyde W. Yancy, chief of cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said that, once again, medicine finds that moderation is key.
"Coffee is not the enemy," he said, and "heart failure is not a mystery."
Greater gains can be made in reducing the risk of heart failure through medical intervention and adapting a healthy lifestyle, including adequate blood pressure detection and treatment, control of obesity and early introduction of evidence-based therapy for those with any evidence of ventricular dysfunction, Yancy said.
Still, a better understanding of the most-consumed beverage in the world may contribute to heart health.
"We know the risk factors involved and we know how best to treat the disease," said Yancy. "If we keep things simple, perhaps we can make progress."

Other indicators for discharge: lower patient / client to continue care, patient / client is unable to continue to progress towards the goals because of medical or psychosocial complications, or the therapist determines that the patient / client will most benefit from therapy. Discharge planning: To improve continuity of care, plans are being made to prepare the patient / client to move from one place to another, usually a multidisciplinary process. Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain
Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: CAIRO -? Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate, was declared Egypt?s first Islamist president on Sunday with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who had been tapped as prime minister by former President Hosni Mubarak.
In an address to Egyptians late Sunday night, Morsi reiterated his platform of unifying all Egyptians. Of those who died while protesting more than a year ago, he said, "Their blood will not go in vain."
Morsi becomes Egypt?s fifth president, following Mubarak, who was president for nearly 30 years before mass protests across the country forced him to resign in February 2011.
The announcement by the state election committee Sunday touched off a jubilant celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters had gathered in 97-degree heat. The crowd waved national flags and chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great!"
Morsi?will be sworn in on July 1, according to the election timetable.
His victory followed?speculation about backroom deals and suspected interference by the ruling military council in determining the outcome in favor of Shafiq, Mubarak?s prime minister.
In his speech Sunday night, Morsi said that contrary to popular belief, he was grateful to the police, whom he called his "brothers and children." He said he would rely on them to maintain "security from the inside."

Morsi, who received an engineering degree from the University of Southern California in the early 1980s according to media reports, was a last-minute candidate, chosen to represent the Brotherhood after their preferred choice was disqualified.
On the campaign trail, he promised to institute Islamic law. One of his supporters, cleric Safwat el-Hegazy, issued a direct challenge to Israel, calling for a Muslim super-state across the Middle East with Jerusalem as its capital.
Morsi, 60, distanced himself from the cleric?s comments, but they trailed him on the campaign despite his assertion that he will respect international treaties, including the 1979 peace accord, on which much U.S. aid depends. He said he will not, however, meet with Israeli officials, according to the BBC.
He has also pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority worried about potential religious rule. He has repeated that he would maintain his independence from the Brotherhood and not turn Egypt into a theocracy.
Morsi won the first round ballot in May with less than a quarter of the vote.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups on Sunday. Several hundred Shafiq supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!'' while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.
The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States.?
Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.?The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details.
Morsi "will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo. "Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around. This would be a mistake. His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee named the winner.
Sunday's result -- 500 days after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak -- is historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.
The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.
The military has held power in Egypt for nearly 60 years since the revolution to overthrow a dynasty.
Iran's Foreign Ministry congratulated Egyptians on Sunday for Morsi's victory, saying Egypt was in the final stages of an "Islamic Awakening."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s office released a statement saying he "appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome."
"Israel expects continue cooperation with the Egyptian administration on the basis of the peace accord between the two countries, which is in the interest of the two peoples and contributes to regional stability,'' the statement said.

The son of a peasant farmer, Morsi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1982 after studying at Cairo University.?
Following his studies in the United States, he returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.?

Green Pest Control Methods for Your Home
There are green options are everywhere you turn these days. Taking care of the environment is a part of most people's everyday lives. From recycling our water bottles and newspapers to reducing waste whenever possible and reusing much of what once was thoughtlessly dumped in landfills. Today there are even many green pest control alternatives.
We no longer have to resort to using harsh or dangerous chemicals to keep our homes free of pests. There are effective alternatives for eradicating pests and prevent recurrent infestations. Here are a few of the choices the environmentally conscious consumer has for pest control management.
Prevention
Preventing pest infestation from occurring in the first place is always the greenest method of pest control. There are a number of methods that can be used to prevent pests from gaining access to your home. If you don't personally have the time or skill to practice these methods, consider hiring a qualified handyman to help you.
- Caulking. Making sure your windows are caulked will keep flies and spiders out as well as ants, roaches and many other insects.
- Screens. A tightly meshed window screen will let air circulate but will also keep bed bugs out. Screens can also be used in attics to keep rodents from getting inside to nest and reproduce.
- Cleanliness. Basic housekeeping jobs can be surprisingly effective pest control techniques. Vacuuming will pick up many common pests. Keeping the floors swept will eliminate food sources, too.
Treatment
Despite the best preventative measure, sometimes treatment is necessary to get rid of a pest problem. However, you can stay green while treating for pests. Your exterminator should give you options and information to make the best choice for you home. Here are a few of the options that may be made available to you.
- Mechanical measures. Traps and barriers are two methods of mechanical pest control measures. You can trap an animal and relocate it and you can set up barrier to keep it from reentering the home.
- Cultural control. This means altering the environment to deter pest or convince them to relocate on their own. Moving a woodpile away from the house so termites choose a different feeding ground is one example of cultural control.
- Targeted treatments. You may have to use some type of treatment to completely eradicate a dangerous or damaging pest. However, if you hire an environmentally sensitive company then they can target the treatment to as small an area as possible. They may also be able to use detergent sprays instead of toxic chemicals.

Utley is now expected to travel to Philadelphia for the final stage of his rehab assignment. That is likely to include his playing in one more minor-league game, probably Tuesday at Triple A Lehigh Valley, before being activated for Wednesday?s game against Pittsburgh ? provided there are no setbacks.
The 33-year-old has been on the disabled list since the end of spring training because of a degenerative issue behind his left kneecap.
Utley batted .259/.344/.425 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 103 regular-season games last year before going 7-for-16 (.438/.571/.688) in Philadelphia?s NLDS loss to the Cardinals. The Phillies ? currently 8 1/2 games back in the National League East ? will hope that he can provide a serious offensive spark.

Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge, welcomed their first child, Dixie Pearl Followill, on Thursday in Nashville.
According to People magazine, the bouncing bundle of joy arrived at the rock-star hour of 1 a.m., weighing a healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.
"Mom, dad and baby are happy, healthy and enjoying their new addition," a spokesperson for the band told the magazine. The couple were married in Santa Barbara, California, in May 2011 at San Ysidro Ranch after dating for more than two years.
The birth of the couple's daughter puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather tumultuous year for the Kings.
