The Illinois Policy Institute seeks a Vice President of Government Affairs (VPGA) with excellent government affairs skills to inspire changes in hearts, minds and laws that will improve economic outcomes in Illinois.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in government affairs and a commitment to the principles of personal responsibility and free enterprise. The ideal candidate will also be a proven relationship builder/strategic thinker with political savvy and solid judgment.
Responsibilities
The VPGA?s responsibilities will include:
- Crafting and implementing the organization?s legislative strategy
- Building relationships with key decision makers in Illinois, including government officials and policymakers
- Creating and maintaining a vibrant network of activists and key influencers that can impact the decision making of government officials in Illinois
- Providing written and oral legislative testimony, whether personally or from the Institute?s policy experts
- Crafting regular legislative updates
- Serving as a spokesperson for the Institute for media opportunities, including print, radio, Internet and television
- Coordinating the Institute?s involvement in meetings and events relevant to its government affairs strategy, including teletownhalls
- Coordinating quarterly public opinion polls on topics relevant to political discourse within the state
- Developing and reporting on the annual budget of all government affairs activities
- Managing government affairs and outreach staff
- Supporting the CEO in fundraising by cultivating relationships with contributors, assisting with funding requests, and reporting on accomplishments
Requirements
The ideal candidate for the VPGA role will possess the following attributes:
- 8+ years of experience in public affairs, Capitol Hill/state legislative work, or related field
- Familiarity with the policy arena, the legislative process and key players/influencers in Illinois a major plus
- Knowledge of and experience with budget/tax/pension reform/health care/education/labor/transparency issues a major plus
- Superb relationship-building skills
- Desire to work collaboratively with Illinois Policy Institute staff and allies
- Strong project management skills and ability to multi-task, set priorities and follow-through
- A sincere dedication to making Illinois a better place to live and work
- Strong commitment to the principles of personal responsibility and free enterprise
- Media experience a major plus but not required
The VPGA will report to the Executive Vice President. The VPGA is a fulltime, permanent position. The VPGA can be located in Springfield, Chicago or in certain circumstances a virtual office somewhere in the state of Illinois. Regardless of location, the VPGA will be required to spend the majority of time in Springfield when the legislature is in session. During the off-season, the VPGA will frequently travel around the state engaging in outreach.
