Pastor of historic church to speak at Valley's MLK breakfast

ANDOVER ? The Rev. Gregory G. Groover Sr., chair of the Boston School Committee, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Merrimack Valley Martin Luther King Breakfast.

The breakfast will be held Monday, Jan. 16, at 8:30 a.m. in the Wyndham Hotel, 123 Old River Road.

The theme of the breakfast is "Where Do We Go from Here? Chaos or Community?," which is the title of a book written by Dr. King.

The event is sponsored by the Merrimack Valley Branch NAACP.

"It is significant that our nation honors Dr. King at the beginning of this long political year. He was not a politician, he never held public office, but worked for the good of all people outside of the political system," said the Rev. Roger A, Sawtelle, president of the NAACP branch.

"In these difficult times when politics is often divisive, his message of the 'beloved community' is more important than ever," Sawtelle said.

Also at the breakfast, which will include gospel music, the Merrimack Valley NAACP will honor its past president, Thomas Johnson of Haverhill. He will receive the Bennie Armstrong Award for Business and Community Betterment.

Groover is pastor to the historic Charles Street AME Church in Boston. His work to improve the education of children is the basis of much of the book, Amazing Grace, by Jonathan Kozol. In 2008 he was appointed to the restructured Boston School Committee and in 2011 he was appointed as chair.
